I Took a One Second Video Every Day for a Semester…

In my previous post Personalizing Your New Year’s Resolution, I stated that this was going to be a year full of change. And boy, was I right. I have had MANY unexpected life changes, and it is actually so cool to look back on my New Years Resolutions and see how I have incorporated each of them in some way into my life.

For my third goal of the year, I said that I wanted to strive to stay present. I hinted that I had an exciting project that I was working on, and I CAN FINALLY SHARE IT WITH YOU GUYS!

Last December, I found a super fun program called Leap Second, an app where you can upload a one second video every day and it combines them to make a giant video. I knew that this is something that I wanted to try.

My freshman year of college, I definitely struggled getting out of my shell. It was a tough year, and I felt like I really didn’t fit in. I would sit in my dorm and binge watch Friends instead of hanging out with my actual friends. With one of my goals this year being to remain present in every aspect of my life, I wanted to take that to a different level by actually going and DOING something about it.

On New Years Eve of 2018, I took my first one second video. Ultimately, what I wanted to accomplish from this challenge is being able to capture something every day that made me happy. Anything counts (as long as it was one second). At first, I thought that there was no way I was going to be able to accomplish this. I didn’t think my life was nearly interesting enough to create something that ya’ll would want to actually watch. I’ll be honest, some days were harder than others. I pushed myself and tried not to beat myself up if I missed a day here or there. I took one second videos (almost) every day, from December 31st of 2018 to April 26, 2019 (that’s almost FOUR MONTHS).

What I’ve learned from this is we often get so caught up in our struggles and in our problems that we forget to look around at the beauty we are surrounded by every day. Whether that was a friendly face, a sunset, a cup of coffee, or even homework on my computer screen; there was something every. single. day that allowed me to be thankful for this precious life I have been given. I look back on this semester of college and am truly overflowing with joy. I made so many new friends, I pushed myself out of my comfort zone, and I spent time daily to inwardly reflect and acknowledge that life is so freakin’ beautiful!

Yes, there were days where I was sad and literally spent all day in bed. Yes, there were days where I simply forgot to take a video all together. But what I learned from this is to not take any moments for granted. The beautiful thing about memories is that they are in fact, memories. Moments aren’t meant to last forever. Our lives our fleeting, and this challenge has shown me how to live PRESENT every day.

In short, this video has shown me everything that I love about my life. It has shown me how to take a step back and truly realize that there is always something to be thankful for. Dear friends, I am so happy with where I’m at in my life. I am growing, just like I said that I wanted to (resolution #6: Wilt, Change, Regrow, Bloom). I am beyond in love with the place I live, and that I have this mountain of support from friends and family, and a place where I truly feel like I belong.

If you are struggling with staying present in your own life, I highly recommend you try this challenge. Live intentionally. Stay present, because this life doesn’t last forever. But man, is it beautiful.

I love you all. Enjoy my video and this snapshot into the life of Bella!

P.S., I loved this challenge so much that I decided to continue taking one second videos throughout this year. At the end of this year, I’ll share a whole YEAR of videos!! 🙂
